What are Expressive Language Disorders?

Students with expressive language disorders have difficulty using language. They may present with difficulties such as:

  • Naming pictures or objects

  • Asking questions

  • Using appropriate gestures

  • Formulating grammatically-correct sentences

  • Using the correct word form or word ending

  • Altering their communication based on the situation and the listener

  • Initiating and maintaining conversation

  • Using the correct pronouns

Expressive language disorders can negatively impact a student’s ability to express their thoughts, wants, and needs. They may also affect social and other interactions. Expressive language disorders affect students’ use of language related to its form, content, and/or function.

  • Phonology: The sound system and rules related to sound combinations of language.

  • Morphology: The aspect of language related to the structure of the meaningful units of words.

  • Syntax: The order and combination of words in sentences.

  • Semantics: The meaning of words and word combinations in sentences.

  • Pragmatics: The system of language related to its use in functional and social communication.
