What are Expressive Language Disorders?
Students with expressive language disorders have difficulty using language. They may present with difficulties such as:
- Naming pictures or objects
- Asking questions
- Using appropriate gestures
- Formulating grammatically-correct sentences
- Using the correct word form or word ending
- Altering their communication based on the situation and the listener
- Initiating and maintaining conversation
- Using the correct pronouns
Expressive language disorders can negatively impact a student’s ability to express their thoughts, wants, and needs. They may also affect social and other interactions. Expressive language disorders affect students’ use of language related to its form, content, and/or function.
Form
Phonology: The sound system and rules related to sound combinations of language.
Morphology: The aspect of language related to the structure of the meaningful units of words.
Syntax: The order and combination of words in sentences.
Content
Semantics: The meaning of words and word combinations in sentences.
Function
Pragmatics: The system of language related to its use in functional and social communication.
Therapy for Expressive Language Disorders
eLuma’s treatment for expressive language disorders focuses on capitalizing on the individual’s strengths, improving functional skills, and creating support systems to help compensate for deficits. The eLuma online speech therapy team and the individual Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in helping the students progress. They work in collaboration with the student’s interdisciplinary team, which may include: the special education administrators, the general education teacher, special education teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, and/or mental health professional.
