Our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can provide all of the same required services live and online, through a fully-secure, FERPA-compliant platform, as they can in person — and can do so with a high degree of effectiveness, efficiency and flexibility. What are Voice Disorders?
Voice disorders cause abnormal vocal tone, quality, resonance, or loudness. Abnormalities in the voice have a variety of causes and can be categorized as organic or functional disorders.
Organic voice disorders are physiologically-based and can be structural or neurogenic.
Structural voice disorders result from physical differences in the vocal structures.
Neurogenic voice disorders are caused by issues with the nervous system’s control of the vocal structures.
Functional voice disorders are the result of inefficient or improper use of the voice.
A voice disorder can negatively affect a student’s ability to communicate effectively. It can also impact the child’s self-esteem, academic performance, and social development. Vocal fold nodules are among the most common forms of voice disorder seen in children. These inflammatory growths causes changes in vocal fold closure and vibration. Children with vocal fold nodules often present with a breathy, hoarse, or harsh vocal quality.
Treating Voice Disorders
As part of a multidisciplinary team, eLuma’s Speech-Language Pathologists can provide behavioral treatment approaches to reduce the negative effects of voice disorders. Online voice therapy and behavioral treatment techniques are chosen based on the student’s strengths, age, support system, and type of voice disorder.
