Student Behavior Decoded: Recognizing Signs of Distress in K-12 Settings

Learn how to distinguish between typical developmental behaviors and those that indicate potential adjustment challenges with our latest webinar presented by Dr. John Kelly, PhD. Dr. Kelly will also provide participants with guidance on identifying early warning signs of emotional distress and connecting students with appropriate resources and referral sources.

After this workshop attendees will be able to:

  • Distinguish between typical developmental behaviors and behaviors that indicate potential adjustment challenges.
  • Identify early warning signs of emotional distress.
  • Identify at least two resources or referral sources when concerned about a student’s social, emotional, and behavioral adjustment.

About the Presenter:

Dr. John Kelly, NASP Past-President

Dr. John Kelly is a retired school psychologist from the Commack School District on Long Island, NY, where he worked for 36 years. He recently returned from working on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands for the VI Department of Education, where he helped develop social and emotional programs for the schools. He is also an Adjunct Professor at St. John’s University in the School Psychology program. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University.

Dr. Kelly has presented at numerous national and international conferences on topics that include mental and behavioral health services for children, advocacy training for school psychologists, legislative issues related to education and children, leadership development, violence and bullying prevention, and suicide awareness.

Dr. Kelly is on the Executive Board of the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP) and is a Past-President of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Dr. Kelly has received numerous state and national awards, including the NYS School Practitioner of the Year in 2001 and the NASP School Psychologist of the Year in 2003.
