An accent, or dialect, is the variance in the way people from different regions or national origins speak the same sound. Accents are not speech or language disorders but are simply natural differences that are part of any spoken language. If an individual wishes to modify his or her accent, a Speech-Language Pathologist can support them in the process.

  • Accentedness: The degree to which an accent is perceived by the listener through the listener’s comparison of the accent to the speech patterns of the listener’s community.
  • Comprehensibility: The ease of comprehension of the speaker’s message, based on the time and effort required for the listener to process it.
  • Intelligibility: The level to which the listener actually understands the message.
