2020 ASHA Certification Standards Changes
What SLPs Need to Know about the Upcoming Changes to the ASHA Certification Standards.
Here at eLuma, we fully support the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The organization is dedicated to moving the practices of Speech-Lanugage Pathology and Audiology forward. The new ASHA Certification Standards for Speech-Language Pathology seek to better prepare SLPs for successful practice in the field. The new standards increase the requirements for supervision, coursework, and continuing education. The changes will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
Changes for Certification Renewal:
- SLPs renewing their ASHA certification will need to earn one of their 30 certification maintenance hours in Ethics, beginning with the 2020-2022 certification maintenance interval.
Changes for Supervision:
- Clinical Fellowship mentors and clinical supervisors will be required to have a minimum of two hours of post-certification professional development in supervision, prior to supervising.
- Supervisors will be required to have at least nine months of practice experience post-certification before supervising.
Changes for First-Time Certification Applicants:
- Applicants will be required to have completed coursework in basic physics and chemistry.
- Speech sound production, literacy, feeding, and fluency disorders will be included within the current nine core content areas of required knowledge and skills for SLPs.
- Applicants will be encouraged to include interprofessional education and practice in their clinical practicum and fellowship experiences.
We encourage you to learn more and embrace these new standards.
